Barn Conversion

Surrey, 2021

The project consists of the construction of three new dwellings through the conversion of an agricultural barn on a brownfield site in Surrey. The dwellings are situated beneath a large, pre-cast concrete agricultural barn. The new structure is built around and integrated into the existing frame. The three dwellings have framed views overlooking the countryside beyond.

The building's detailing retains its agricultural nature through the use of basic, robust materials, carefully coordinated with the existing structure. Familiar services, such as gutters and downpipes, are exaggerated to expose the nature of the original building. New, modern services are integrated and concealed from view while ensuring the dwellings exceed their performance and sustainability targets.
