New build & Retrofit
Lewes, East Sussex - 2024
A new pool and pool house set within the grounds of a large detached house in the East Sussex countryside.
The proposal looks to respond to the surrounding local vernacular consisting of agricultural barns, gabled roofs and timber framed structures to nestle into the landscape. The pool house is located close to the house, but with no surrounding trees or hedges, the structure can provide shelter from sunlight and rain whilst providing aspect all around from it’s prominent position to encourage use all year round.
The facade is constructed in red brickwork with a low level plinth. Protruding brickwork columns are added at corner junctions and window openings to animate and express the structure. The flint is integrated it into the brickwork to break up the brick bond and add variety and colour to the elevation.
The pitched roof is shallow to reduce the overall impact of the poolhouse. The roof projects over the long elevations to provide shade and shelter. It does not project over the short elevations to emphasize the gable and heighten the barn type appearance.
A project working in collaboration with Flower Michelin Architects.
