Pool House
Lewes, East Sussex - 2024
Nestled within the grounds of a large detached house in the East Sussex countryside, this is a new build and retrofit project featuring a pool and pool house. Designed to respond to the surrounding local vernacular, the proposal integrates into the landscape while providing a prominent position that encourages year round use and offers shelter and expansive views.
The proposal responds to the surrounding local vernacular, consisting of agricultural barns, gabled roofs, and timber framed structures, to nestle into the landscape. The pool house, set within the grounds of a large detached house in the East Sussex countryside and located close to the main house, provides shelter from sunlight and rain. With no surrounding trees or hedges, its prominent position offers views all around.
The facade is constructed in red brickwork, with a low-level plinth. Protruding brickwork columns are added at corner junctions and window openings to animate and express the structure. Flint is integrated into the brickwork to break up the brick bond and add variety and color to the elevation.
The pitched roof is shallow to reduce the overall impact of the pool house. The roof projects over the long elevations to provide shade and shelter. It does not project over the short elevations, however, to emphasize the gable and heighten the barn-type appearance.
A project working in collaboration with Flower Michelin Architects.
